Introduction

The Greek Tragedy Masks first originated from the Athens, and slowly spread throughout Greece. The Greek Tragedy Masks were used in theatrical performance mainly to honor the Greek God Dionysos. They honored Dionysos because he was the god of wine, merriment and theatre. Ancient Greek actors also used these Masks so that the audience could be made aware of the emotions of the character easily since other parts of the audience were sitting far, but the question is why is this particular mask so significant in our history? In this Blog I will answer this by exploring the different areas of this mask such as it’s history and development, culture, common characters in this mask form, archetypes the common characters represent, efforts that are associated with their movement, materials the masks are made out of and the symbolism of the mask in terms of color, shape, facial expression of the mask.
